For me The Left Hand of Darkness is one of the best science fiction novels of the century. But it also contains one important question. What if people were not divided into males and females? Would the word be a better place? And if so, would people be eager to live in such of society? The Gethenians seem to be happy and satisfied with their lives, but they do not live in a completely free world. People who are different are being sent to work on the Farms. Some of them do not survive the transport to the destination point, rest of them starve. Lord Estraven decides to break the rules of society, and helps a stranger to escape has to pay the highest price for his deed. He is killed by his own people, but he succeeds in saving the Envoy's life. In my opinion, this book shows that so called ‘perfect worlds’ or ‘perfect societies’ simply do not exist and an attempt to achieve them is bound to fail.
